Officials warn of Chinese hacks on US infrastructure: family steps

How can my family prepare for critical infrastructure hacks?

The Washington Times reported in May 2026 that the lead US cybersecurity agency says critical infrastructure is vulnerable to Chinese sabotage. A separate report covers a CISA warning after a cyberattack on wind and solar sites in Poland. Families can prepare with cash, paper information, stored water and a battery radio.

The Washington Times reported on May 7, 2026 that US critical infrastructure is vulnerable to Chinese sabotage, according to the lead US cybersecurity agency. The report says the federal government is taking steps to mitigate these threats.

What happened

SC Media reports that CISA issued a warning on February 10, 2026, after a December 2025 cyberattack on about 30 wind and solar installations in Poland. The attack was linked to a Russia-affiliated group, and Dragos attributes it to a group called Electrum. The warning was aimed at US operators as well.

What it means for your home

A household cannot control the grid or a city's networks. If card payments, phone service or internet go down, a home with cash, paper information and a battery radio keeps working through the gap. Owners of solar or home batteries should also know how to run them by hand.

What to do this week

  • Keep some cash in small bills.
  • Print a paper copy of key phone numbers and addresses.
  • Keep a paper map of your area in the car or a drawer.
  • Charge and test a battery or crank radio.
  • If you use solar or a home battery, read how to run it without its app or network.

For a step-by-step plan, read the 72-hour blackout plan.
