What is a derecho and how do I prepare for one?
A derecho is a fast-moving line of storms with strong straight-line winds that can cover a wide area. Watchers.news reported that an August 2026 derecho swept Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Prepare with a weather radio, a flashlight in every room and a safe interior spot to shelter.
Watchers.news reported on Aug. 12, 2026 that at least six tornadoes were confirmed after a derecho swept through Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. The official derecho classification is still pending.
What happened
Watchers.news said at least six tornadoes were confirmed after the storms. A related report said severe storms left at least two people dead and caused flooding across the Midwest and Ohio Valley. The Storm Prediction Center said the official derecho determination would come in 2027, after Storm Data is finalized.
