Many Americans have thin emergency savings: start with supplies
How can I prepare if my emergency savings are thin?
A 2026 U.S. News survey found 43% of adults could not cover a $1,000 emergency from savings. Start small: set a modest cash goal, then keep a few supplies such as water and food on hand so you do not have to buy them at short notice.
WTOP reports that 43% of Americans cannot cover a $1,000 emergency from savings. The figure comes from a January 2026 U.S. News survey of 1,216 adults.
What happened
The same survey found that the median savings balance among people who have savings is $5,000. Bankrate, cited by WTOP in February 2026, reports that about 24% of Americans have no emergency savings at all.
What it means for your home
Supplies do not replace savings. Having some on hand, however, means you will not have to buy them at short notice during an emergency.
What to do this week
- Pick a small monthly amount to set aside, even a few dollars.
- Set a first goal of $1,000, if that feels realistic.
- Buy one water container and fill it.
- Add a few days of food your family already eats.
- Write down who in the household does which task.
Start with the family emergency plan to share jobs among everyone at home.
