Microsoft's 60,000 exit offers: a checklist if your job feels shaky
What is Microsoft's voluntary exit offer, and what should a household check?
Microsoft sent a Voluntary Exit Offer to about 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of its workforce, in an October 26, 2026 memo. Staff have until early December to decide, and Microsoft says the terms are similar to standard severance. A household can respond by checking its food, water and important papers now.
KIRO 7 reports that Microsoft offered a Voluntary Exit Offer to about 60,000 employees in an October 26 memo from its Chief People Officer. Eligible staff can decide until early December.
What happened
The offer covers staff at level 70 and below in the US, Canada, UK and India. Microsoft says the terms are similar to its standard severance, and a spokesperson said it does not expect uptake near the level of an earlier program.
What it means for your home
The offer is a choice for individual employees. It is still a good reminder to check your safety net before income changes.
What to do this week
- Write down your household's monthly essentials and how many weeks they would last.
- Store a few weeks of shelf-stable food and a supply of water.
- Gather copies of IDs, insurance cards, and bank and tax records in one fireproof bag.
- Keep a paper list of key phone numbers.
- Note the dates of any pending bills or insurance renewals.
The family emergency plan gives a simple checklist for this.
