AWS outage in July: keep offline copies of key information
How can my family keep working during an AWS outage?
IncidentHub reported an AWS CloudFront outage on July 16, 2026, that lasted about three hours and 33 minutes. Outages like this can lock people out of files and contacts stored online. Keep offline copies of key documents, maps and phone numbers on a drive you own, so your family can reach them when online services are down.
IncidentHub reported an AWS outage on July 16, 2026, that lasted about three and a half hours. It affected CloudFront customers who use VPC Origins. IncidentHub also listed downstream services it detected, including Canvas and Blackboard.
What happened
From 07:45 to 11:18 UTC, customers using VPC Origins saw more 5xx server errors, according to IncidentHub. Other origin types were not affected. AWS cited an internal constraint in the fleet that manages connections to private VPC origins.
What it means for your home
Many people keep files, contacts and maps only in online services. When a provider has an outage, you can lose access for hours even though your own devices are working.
What to do this week
- Copy key documents, such as IDs, insurance cards and bills, to a drive you own.
- Keep a printed list of emergency contacts and account phone numbers.
- Save offline maps of your area to your phone or laptop.
- Test one offline copy to be sure it opens without internet.
