Google Cloud, Azure and GitHub outages: build an offline toolkit

How can I prepare my home for a cloud outage?

Recent outages at Google Cloud, Azure and GitHub lasted hours and possibly affected many services. A cloud outage can cut off access to maps, documents and help tools at the same time. Keep offline maps, copies of key files and a local reference library on a laptop, so your household can still find information when online services fail.

Three cloud outages between August and October 2026 affected Google Cloud, Azure and GitHub. StatusGator and API Status Check both reported on these incidents.

What happened

StatusGator reported a power event on Oct. 20 in Google Cloud's London zone that spread to the wider europe-west2 region, and it tracked 171 possibly affected downstream services. API Status Check, citing third-party status trackers, said an Azure gateway outage hit 18 regions from Sept. 30 into Oct. 1. StatusGator also reported about seven hours of GitHub Unicorn error pages and Copilot failures on Aug. 17.

What it means for your home

Many households rely on cloud services for work, school, maps and bills, even though they do not run those services. A local copy keeps you moving when a provider stops responding.

What to do this week

  • Download offline maps of your area to your phone.
  • Copy key files, such as school, medical and bill records, to a drive you own.
  • Set up a laptop or mini PC with a local copy of reference material.
  • Keep a paper list of account phone numbers and support contacts.
  • Test one offline copy this week to be sure it opens without internet.

The step-by-step setup is in Offline AI and Wikipedia on a laptop.
