Farmers' Almanac vs NOAA on winter: prepare for either forecast

Is the Old Farmer's Almanac winter 2026 forecast accurate?

The Old Farmer's Almanac expects mostly mild conditions nationally, with a colder zone from central New England through the Appalachians and Ohio Valley, and above-normal snow in some regions. Its snowfall figures are not NOAA-confirmed. Whichever forecast proves right, stock blankets, a safe heat source and a working CO alarm.

Long-range forecasts for this winter do not agree. The Old Farmer's Almanac published its 2026-27 outlook on August 27, 2026, as reported by The Watchers.

What happened

The Almanac expects mostly mild conditions nationally, but a colder zone from central New England through the Appalachians and Ohio Valley. It also forecasts above-normal snow for parts of the Northeast, Appalachians, Intermountain region, Pacific Northwest and Alaska. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center said on August 13 that El Niño was strengthening, with over 90% odds of becoming very strong this winter.

What it means for your home

The Almanac's snowfall figures are not confirmed by NOAA, so treat them as one forecast, not a plan. A cold snap can cut heat and power, so it makes sense to prepare for cold weather no matter which forecast turns out closer.

What to do this week

  • Check that every bed has a warm blanket.
  • Test your carbon monoxide alarm and replace its batteries.
  • Inspect your heater and use only a safe heat source indoors.
  • Ask your pharmacist about refills so you have a few days of medicine on hand.
  • Keep a weather radio with fresh batteries.
