The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on April 16, 2026, that Generac is recalling about 149,400 portable generators because fuel can leak.

What happened

Fuel can leak from the carburetor during the first filling, creating fire and burn hazards. Generac received 114 reports of fuel leaks, and CPSC lists no injuries. Affected models include the GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500 series, GP8000E and GP9500ETF in specific serial ranges. They were sold at Home Depot, Lowe's and other retailers from May 2025 through February 2026.

What it means for your home

Only units in the listed model and serial ranges are covered. Check before you rely on a generator for backup power.

What to do this week

  • Find the model and serial number on your generator.
  • Compare them with the CPSC recall notice, recall number 26-407.
  • If your unit is included, follow the instructions in the CPSC recall notice.
  • Run any generator only outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents.
