A pool heater recall for carbon monoxide: test your CO alarms

What should I do about a carbon monoxide recall?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled Hayward Universal-HC pool heaters because they can emit dangerous carbon monoxide. No injuries have been reported, and the remedy is a free in-home inspection and repair. Meanwhile, install battery-backed CO alarms on every floor and test them monthly.

On Sept. 17, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of Hayward pool heaters that can emit carbon monoxide (CO). The notice is published on the CPSC website.

What happened

The CPSC recall, number 26-777, covers Hayward HDFS400 Universal-HC Series pool heaters. About 4,600 units were sold through pool equipment distributors, builders and service professionals from March through July 2026. No injuries or deaths have been reported. The remedy is a free in-home inspection and repair.

What it means for your home

A recall like this is a good reason to check the CO alarms you already have.

What to do this week

  • If you own a Hayward Universal-HC pool heater, contact Hayward about the free inspection and repair.
  • Install battery-backed CO alarms on every floor and near sleeping areas.
  • Press the test button on each alarm and write the test date on a calendar.
  • Replace any alarm that fails a test or has passed its listed life.
  • Learn the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you suspect CO, get everyone outside and call 911.
